WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF PYORRHEA

Generally pyorrhea occurs from poor oral hygiene and the conditions that lead to pyorrhea due to poor hygiene are mentioned below:

  1. Plaques on teeth – Due to poor oral hygiene the food accumulates in the mouth in the form of sugars and starch that interact with bacteria and convert into sticky film known as plaque. On eating or drinking the bacteria present in the plaque produce acids and those acids lead to deterioration of enamel and produce gum disease like pyorrhea.
  2. Gum inflammation – If gum inflammation is not treated then it proceeds to further deterioration and there is formation of pockets along with the gum tissue which later on is filled with bacteria and then these bacteria get invaded into bones and lead to pyorrhea.
  3. Some risk factors may lead to pyorrhea like – Toothbrush trauma, tobacco chewing, poor dentures, chemical irritants, tongue thrusting, nutritional deficiency of vitamin B, vitamin C, and antidepressants.

Also along with that doctor will measure the depth of the pockets beside the teeth. In some cases if there is any confusion in the diagnosis then the doctor may refer you for dental x-rays.
