WHAT IS BLOOD PRESSURE?
The lateral pressure exerted by the blood on the walls of the arteries while flowing through them is known as blood pressure. The blood pressure is further systolic and diastolic.
Systolic blood pressure is created when the heart contracts and send blood into the arteries. It is considered normal at 120 mm Hg. Though the latest range of normal systolic blood pressure is 120-139 mm Hg.
Diastolic blood pressure is the lower limit of blood pressure when the arteries rest in between pumping the blood. It is considered normal at 80 mm Hg.
WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF BLOOD PRESSURE?
In layman terms, the heart pumps blood into the arteries which carry it further to the body organs. So the blood exerts a specific pressure laterally on the elastic walls of the arteries which in return push it further to help maintain a pressure that would allow the blood to circulate within the body and back to the heart. So for the normal functioning of heart and the circulatory system an optimum blood pressure has to be maintained. In conditions where the blood pressure rises too high above normal or falls too low below normal different heart related disorders may arise and result into heart attack or heart collapse.
