WHAT IS RINGWORM INFECTION?
The ringworm infection is a fungal infection that affects the human skin. These fungi thrive on warm and moist areas found in skin. It starts with a small patch of infected skin and then it spreads outwards. The patch is red, inflamed area of infection in the form of a ring. This ring increases in surface and area and spreads further. It is a contagious disease that can affect people around the victim too. It is mostly found in children as they are more prone to such infections.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF RINGWORM INFECTION?
The name Ringworm is a misnomer. It has no relation to any parasitic worms known to us. It is actually a fungal infection that can be caused by a variety of different fungi known to Human species. These fungi feed on the keratin layer present on the top layer of skin. They are usually not found in the deeper layers as they cannot survive there, although exception is the case of groin ringworm infections. These fungi come in contact of the body by infected sources like common water pools, towels, infected persons etc.

The symptoms of ringworm are usually similar to other skin infections and a careful study is required to note the difference. The common symptoms of ringworm are:
- Red, itchy skin
- Inflamed skin patches
- Ring shaped infection, although it can be irregular in shape also
- Infection on the hands may look like Athlete foot
- It could be the rash on the groin area also.
