WHAT IS BELL’S PALSY?
It is a type of facial paralysis that occurs due to the inflammation and paralysis of the facial nerve (7th cranial nerve). It is named after CHARLES BELL, a Scottish anatomist. This condition involves a loss of function and drooping of the side of the face affected by the disease. Sometimes both sides of the face may be affected. It is a very stressful condition for the patient who is unable to eat, sleep or even pass a smile back to someone. The condition is however, easily recoverable in most cases without much intervention. In Ayurveda this disease can be compared to Ardita vata which is also a paralytic condition.
WHAT CAUSES BELL’S PALSY?
- Excessive talking, laughing, yawning, eating hard food etc.
- Any facial injury
- Inappropriate posture
- Injury to the vital organs etc.
The above causes are explanations for the development of Ardita vata in patients. Modern medical science has no specific explanation for this disease and considers it idiopathic.
OTHER REASONS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF BELL’S PALSY:
- Middle ear infection
- Herpes simplex virus infection
- EB- virus
- Cytomegalo virus etc.

Bell’s palsy is compared with Ardita disease in Ayurveda which is purely a disease caused by the vitiation of the vata body energy. Vata is the controller of all the nervous activities in the body. Whenever there is a diseased condition that affects any part of the nervous system, Vata dosha is always vitiated.
Nirgundi has vata pacifying properties and oil also has basic vata vitiating properties due to the fat and oily texture which is opposite to the dry characteristic of vata. Nirgundi oil is therefore, preferred for massage in patients of Bell’s palsy, its regular use improves weakness of the facial nerve and its general strength.
