STAMMERING

WHAT IS THE INCIDENCE AND THE CAUSES OF STAMMERING?

StammeringMost people who stutter begin to do so in early childhood (2-5 years). It is estimated that approximately 4-5% of all preschool children stammers. Many regain normal fluency, either spontaneously or following management with a speech therapist. It is estimated that about 1% of all students – an estimated 7,800 children and young people – stammer. In adults, the proportion slightly lowers (about 0.7 %). About as many girls as boys begin to stutter, but in adult stuttering occurs more often in men than in women. Girls get it more often to restore normal fluency. Although we do not know exactly why someone starts to stutter, many people believe that the difficulty has an innate neurological cause. The reasons why some continue to stammer, while others get back normal fluency, are complex.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF STAMMERING?

The symptoms of stuttering are the repetition of sounds, syllables and words, extension and blocking sounds, i.e. cessation of voice production. These basic symptoms called stammering. They appear in varying degrees in people who stutter. The core symptoms of stuttering are involuntary, and often perceived as unpleasant.

Many who begin to stutter, also develops additional symptoms, such as contraction of the muscles of the face or nodding. Such additional symptoms called secondary stuttering. These additional symptoms can be just as disruptive to fluency and communication as core stuttering.

It is also common for people who stutter to find strategies to avoid certain words or sounds or to avoid speaking in certain situations. Such avoidance behavior varies from person to person.

In early childhood (2-5 years), it is usual that a child stutters, that have breaks in their fluency in the form of hesitations and repetitions. It is not always easy to distinguish practice from stammering. When toddlers stutter, the repetitions and hesitations occurs because the child is unable to find the words to say as quickly as older children and adults. The words are not so well stored in the brain yet. When a child strain, it is not because it cannot find the right words, but because the words “get stuck “when they are spoken.
