Praval Bhasma

Introduction

Corals are really beautiful sea creatures which are found in shallow waters in the sea. These are invertebrates found in sea and are responsible for building coral reefs in the sea. In ayurveda Coral reefs are of immense benefit and are used to treat many disorders mainly which are of pitta origin. Medicines are made from its bhasma or its bhasma can be used as it is. Coral calx is known as praval bhasma. We will be reading about this medicine in this article.

Ingredients Used in Praval Bhasma

It contains the following ingredients mentioned below:

1. Praval (Coral reefs)
2. Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis)

Description Of The Ingredients

Following are the medicinal properties of above mentioned ingredients:

• Praval – It has a sweet, sour and astringent taste. Praval is light to digest and has an unctuous or oily properties. Taste conversion after digestion is sweet and is coolant in nature so helps in balancing the pitta dosha from the body.
• Aloe vera – Aloe vera belongs to rasona kula. It is bitter and sweet in taste. It is slimy and sticky (Snigdha and pichchil) in nature with katu (Pungent) vipaka (Taste conversion after digestion). Potency of aloe vera is cool. Juice of aloe vera is used for the formulation.

Method Of Preparation

Following method of preparation is used for making this bhamsa:

• Coral pieces are taken and purified.
• After purification it is grinded to make a fine powder.
• It is further grounded with the aloe vera juice extract.
• This mixture is made into flat disc shaped cakes which are dried and given heat of 800-900 degree celsius for 3-4 hours.
• This process is repeated for three times.
• After that a white coloured powder is obtained known as coral calx.

Medicinal Properties

Following are the medicinal properties of praval bhasma

• It is antacid
• Acts as an Anti-inflammatory
• It is a natural source of calcium so known as anti-arthritic
• Helps in reducing fever so known as antipyretic
• It is a digestive stimulant

Dosha Karma

• It has a sweet, sour taste
• Light to digest and is drying in nature
• Potency is cold
• Resultant taste conversion after digestion is sweet
• Help in pacifying all the three doshas i.e vata, pitta, kapha

Dosage

It can be given in the dose of 500mg if taken as a supplement and 125-1000 mg as a therapeutic dose

Classical Indications

Classically it has been indicated in the following disorders mentioned below:

• For improving skin complexion and luster
• To improve strength and immunity
• In excessive sweating
• Night sweating
• Emaciation
• Rakta pitta (Bleeding disorders)
• Respiratory disorders
• Digestive disorders
• Poisoning
• Psychiatric disorders
• Eye disorders

Indications

It can be indicated in many disorders other than the classical indications. Indications are mentioned below:

• It helps in relieving burning sensation as it is coolant in nature
• Will treat diabetic neuropathy
• Excessive sweating
• Disorders related to hairs such as hair fall, hair growth, rough hair etc.
• Bone disorders like osteoporosis, osteopenia, pains in the joints etc
• All types of fevers
• General debility
• Deficiency of calcium
• Psychological disorders such as depression and anxiety
• Palpitations of the heart
• Ulcerative colitis
• Sunburn
• Excessive or heavy menstrual bleeding
• Tenderness of the breast

Side Effects

There are no side effects of the pure and processed praval bhasma also if it is taken in mentioned therapeutic doses.
