Description

Abhayarishta is a classical Ayurvedic formulation. It is used in the treatment of Arsh (piles). It is used in a myriad of diseases such as constipation, dysuria, flatulence, Anuria, indigestion, abdominal distension, etc. In Ayurveda, it is also known as “King of medicines”. It is a fermented liquid that is made from the herb Abhya also known as Haritaki (Terminalia chebula). It holds high significance for its use in pitta disorders. It contains self-generated alcohol up to 5%-7%.

Kwath Dravya (Decoction Herbs)

  1. Haritaki (Terminalia chebula)
  2. Munakka (Vitis vinifera)

Description Of The Ingredients

  1. Haritaki – It is a well known herb and used as a rasayan in ayurveda. It has rejuvenating properties. It is helpful in digestive disorders. It has a mild laxative effect also and is effective in constipation. It is also good for cardiac health. Haritaki relieves abdominal cramps, bloating, fever, piles etc. It balances all three doshas i.e. Vata, pitta and kapha.
  2. Munakka – This is a variety of dried grapes. It is treated as healthy in traditional Indian medicine. It has a cooling nature and is helpful in various pitta disorders. It controls acidity, increases vision, is effective in dry cough, and improves digestion.
  3. Vaividang – It helps in digestion. It is effective in helminthiasis, colic disease, abdominal disease etc. it is also helpful in fever. It is also useful in disorders of rasa dhatu and oedema. The main action of vidang is that it is helpful in worm infestation.
  4. Mahua Pushpa – Decoction of the flower of this ingredient is helpful in diarrhea, dysentery and thirst. It has carminative properties hence useful in the breakdown of food in the stomach and intestines. It is used in bronchitis and asthma as it has expectorant properties.
  5. Gur – It is mainly used in the Indian kitchen and also in various Ayurvedic medicines. Gur comes with a bunch of health benefits. It increases the volume of urine and faeces. It is also good for the heart. It cleanses and purifies blood. It also promotes good digestive power.  
  6. Gokshura – It is used in stomach aches and has a laxative effect in large doses. It is a strong diuretic, therefore helpful in urinary calculi, dysuria and cystitis.
  7. Trivrit – It has a strong laxative effect and hence useful in constipation, piles. It is used for purification in various enteric diseases for its kaphapita and malashodhan actions. Trivrit eliminates the watery excreta from the body and hence is useful in oedema.
  8. Dhaniya – It has good results in digestive disorders. It has appetizer, digestive, astringent, and liver stimulant properties. repeated administration of dhaniya water is useful in distaste, acidity, emesis, anorexia, indigestion, abdominal pain.
  9. Dhataki – It is the backbone herb of almost asav and arishta preparations. It is a powerful astringent. It pacifies pitta and kapha dosha. It is used in piles, dysentery etc. Powder of these flowers is used in heart diseases.
  10. Indravaruni – Fruit pulp of this ingredient is anthelmintic and purgative. It acts on the liver and intestines. It increases the acidic secretion in the stomach. Indravaruni is effective in diarrheal conditions.
  11. Chavya – It is one among in panchkola group. Its roots and fruit are useful in abdominal pain, indigestion, anorexia etc. It relieves constipation and improves digestion strength. It balances kapha, so useful in productive cough and asthma.
  12. Saunf – It reduces vomiting, dyspepsia. It is purgative in nature. It is also used in abdominal distension, abdominal pain, dysentery and piles. It acts as aam pachak and anuloma and removes Ama Dosha out of the body.
  13. Shunthi – This is an excellent appetizer, anti satiety, digestive and antispasmodic. Due to these properties shunthi is used in anorexia, nausea, loss of appetite, indigestion, abdominal pain etc.
  14. Dantimool – This ingredient has appetizer, liver stimulant and laxative properties. It is used in anorexia, haemorrhoids, constipation etc. Decoction of the leaves of dantimool is used in dyspnoea.
  15. Mochras – This pacifies pitta and kapha dosha. So this is helpful in dysentery, diarrhea, indigestion, burning sensation etc.

Method Of Preparation

  • Take all the decoction herbs and wash them properly.
  • Powdered them properly and sieved to remove impurities and kept aside in a stainless steel container.
  • Now add 42-liters water in that container and make a decoction from those decoction herbs.
  • Boil this mixture until the mixture is reduced to ¼ quantity and filter this decoction to eliminate impurities.
  • Then add all the aromatic herbs in this mixture and stir it properly and filter to remove solid particles.
  • Seal the opening of the container and keep it aside in the fermentation room for 21 days.
  • Make sure to keep a check on the fermentation process.
  • After 21 days, filter the fermented liquid to eliminate the remaining impurities.
  • Keep this filtered liquid aside for 8-10 days.
  • After 10 days again filter this mixture and pour in air-tight containers.
  • Use this abhayarishta after 1 year.

Medicinal Properties

Abhayarishta is an ayurvedic medicine known for constipation and piles. It improves digestion. This formulation enhances the peristaltic movements of the gut and aids in clearing the bowel movements. As it clears the bowel movement, it is ultimately helpful in liver disorders. It stimulates the digestive fire. This formulation has a purgative effect but does not make the intestines weak. If someone is suffering from weak digestion then add kumaryasava in abhayarishta for better results. It has a mild diuretic effect also and hence useful in urinary disorders. It detoxifies the body as it has Ama pachak properties (removes endotoxins). Abhyarishta alone works well, but in chronic cases, Arogyavardhini vati and Lasunadi vati can also be used along with it.

Dosha Karm (Effects On Dosha)

It balances all three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. But it mainly pacifies Vata dosha and reduces kapha dosha.

Arsha (Piles)

Indications

  • Arsha (Piles) – It acts as a laxative, therefore useful for preventing and treating piles. This liquid formulation softens the stool and reduces the strain on the lower portion of the intestines.
  • Liver Cirrhosis – Abhayarishta is a potent hepatoprotective agent. It protects the liver from the damage caused by excessive intake of alcohol and restricts the formation of fatty liver. Therefore it helps in reducing the risk of liver cirrhosis.
  • Ajirna (Indigestion) – This is a powerful digestive stimulant. It has carminative properties that help in the breakdown of food particles in the stomach and intestines. It promotes the secretion of digestive juices. By these properties it improves gut health and alleviates indigestion.
  • Constipation – As already mentioned that it has laxative property. So this liquid is helpful in soften the stool and relieves constipation. It increases the secretion of bile by the liver and acts on peristaltic movement in the stomach and intestines, thereby helping in smooth faecal passage.
  • Abdominal Distension – It helps to eliminate the abdominal gases and in turn reduces the abdominal distension, bloating and gaseous cramps. Abhayarishta contains Haritaki as a main ingredient, which is helpful in reducing intestinal gas, flatulence etc.
  • Urinary Disorders – It also plays a key role in preventing urinary disorders such as retention of urine, painful micturition, renal stones and urinary distension. It has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and thus prevents bacterial infections due to bacteria in the urinary tract and also reduces inflammation and pain while urinating.

Side Effects

  • Take this formulation under the medical supervision.
  • Overdose will lead to loose-motions and stomach-ache.
  • Avoid in pregnancy as it contains Colocynth which can cause abortion.

As already mentioned above that this is a “King of medicine”, Abhayarishta is a powerful herbal formulation for the treatment of various diseases. the ingredients in this formulation such as Haritaki, Vidanga, Chavya, Saunf etc make this fermented decoction a potent herbal remedy for the ailments such as piles, constipation, dysuria etc. it has minute side effects which can be easily avoided by consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner.
