About Interstitial Lung Disease
ILD (Interstitial lung disease) is a variety of acute and chronic lung diseases with pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. It includes a group of diseases that have scarring of the lung tissues between the air sacs of the lungs, resulting the stiffness of the lungs and affects the lungs ability to breathe enough oxygen into bloodstream. This Scarring or thickening of the wall due to many causes. But the exact cause of interstitial lung disease is not known i.e. idiopathic causes.
Symptoms of ILD
The most common symptoms are shortness of breath. Mostly all people who suffers with ILD experiences breathlessness which get worsen with time.
Other symptoms of ILD includes:
- Weight Loss, mostly in people with COP or BOOP.
- Cough, which is usually dry.
Causes of ILD
All types of interstitial lung disease cause thickening of the interstitium i.e. thickening of supportive lung tissues. Thickening may be due to inflammation, scarring, or edema. Some types of ILD are acute and some become chronic i.e. irreversible.
Some of the types of interstitial lung disease include:
1. Interstitial Pneumonia: It occur due to the infection of bacteria, viruses or may be fungi which infect the interstitium of the lungs. A mycoplasma pneumonia is the most common cause of this type of ILD.
2. Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis: A chronic, progressive form of fibrosis or thickening of the interstitium wall. Its cause is unknown.
3. Nonspecific interstitial pneumonitis: ILD often occur with autoimmune condition like:
- Scleroderma
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Radiation
- Occupational and organic exposures
- Medications
There are some known causes which include: Toxins, environmental factors, chronic diseases, cancer etc. Interstitial lung disease may resolve or may lead to irreversible scarring and can damage to the lungs.
There are some examples of idiopathic (unknown causes) of ILD include:
- Usual interstitial pneumonitis (UIP)
- Sarcoidosis
- Langerhans cell histiocytosis
- Cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP)
- Lymphocytic interstitial pneumonitis (LIP)
