Introduction

Immunoglobulins are a kind of antibodies produced by the body to fight for immunity. In a human system, we could find 5 subclasses of immunoglobulin or antibodies – immunoglobulin A (IgA), immunoglobulin G (IgG), immunoglobulin M (IgM), immunoglobulin E (IgE) and immunoglobulin D (IgD).

The most common and simplest antibody in blood circulation is IgG (Immunoglobulin G) and one can find its presence in all body fluids. This is the only immunoglobulin which effectively passes the placenta and offers the fetus passive immunity. The plasma B cells in the blood create and releases this antibody. Between the effector system and antigen, these antibodies function to affect a liaison. These are the major component of humoral immunity and mainly in secondary immune response.

Immunoglobulin G is found in both blood and extracellular fluid. It gets bind to variant pathogens like fungi, viruses, bacteria. It fights and helps to control body infection. IgG helps in pathogen elimination by activating complement system’s classic pathway. IgG gets coated to the surface of pathogens (this process is known as opsonization) and this in turn helps the phagocytic immune cells to recognize the pathogen and then for its ingestion (phagocytosis). It is also associated with hypersensitivity reaction and neutralizes the toxins by binding to it.

A serum test for IgG yields the results to define increased or decreased levels of immunoglobulin. Both give warning sign of infection. A decreased level of IgG owes to deficient immune power of the body which can results in variant infection like GIT infection, ear infection, throat infections, bronchitis, pneumonia or sinus infection. Deficient levels of IgG can be seen in conditions which weakens the immune system.

Too high levels of IgG in the serum indicate chronic infections such as AIDS/HIV or in auto immune disorders.
