What Are The Types Of External Wounds As Per Ayurveda?

  • Patita – Is a type of wound in which organ gets separated from the body.
  • Ghirshta – It is a type of wound in which there is oozing of fluid mixed with little blood associated with burning sensation.
  • Avagadha – It is a type which is more severe than Ghirshta.
  • Vicchinna – Severe than Avagadha.
  • Pravilambi – Is a deep wound which gives injury to the bones.
  • Viddha – Is a piercing type of wound.
  • Bhinna – The Piercing wound of abdomen.
  • Vidalita – Wound caused due to hitting, punching or crushing.

The Therapies Given For The Wounds As Per Ayurveda

  • Vamana therapy – For wounds on the upper part of the body.
  • Vierachana therapy – For wounds on the lower part of the body.
  • Snehabasti (a type of Panchkarma) should be done with medicines mitigating vata dosha.
  • Abhyang – Gentle massage.

What Are The Types Of Wounds?

There are two types of wounds- Open and closed wound which depends on the acuteness and pressure of the injury.

Types Of Open Wound

  • Incisions or incised wounds – Injury done by a clean, sharp-edged object such as a knife, razor, or glass splinter.
  • Lacerations – Irregular tear-like wounds.
  • Abrasions (grazes) – Wounds in which the topmost layer of the skin (the epidermis) is scraped off.
  • Avulsions – A type of amputation where the extremity is pulled off rather than cut off.
  • Puncture wounds – Wound due to the object puncturing the skin.
  • Penetration wounds – Injury or wound caused by knife entering and coming out from the skin.
  • Gunshot wounds – Injury due to bullet or wound by similar power into or through the body.

Types of Closed wounds have fewer categories, but are just as dangerous as open wounds:

  • Hematomas (or blood tumor) – Blood to collect under the skin.
  • Crush injury – It depends on the force applied over a long period of time.

What Should Be The First Aid Given For External And Open Wounds?

  • Wash your hands
  • Stop the bleeding
  • Clean the wound
  • Apply an antibiotic or petroleum jelly
  • Cover the wound
  • Change the dressing
  • Get a tetanus shot
  • Watch for signs of infection

What Is The Ayurvedic Concept About Wounds?

As per Ayurvedic texts wounds are called as a VRANA. The word Vrana is derived from Dhatu in Sanskrit grammar it is defined as Vru- vrunoti, vrunute. Vrut- varayat-khadayat-aacchadayat; which means to cover, to conceal and to envelope respectively.

Vrana according to Sushruta – Formations of the scar after tissue destruction can be either due to extrinsic factor (wound) or it can be due to intrinsic factor (ulcer). Sites, where Vrana occurs, is termed as Vrana Vastu or Vrana Adhishtana in Ayurveda. The wounds mainly depends on the body part which is categorized mainly under eight sites where it can occur viz – Twaka (skin), Mamsa (muscle), Sira (vessels), Snayu (ligaments), Sandhi (joints), Koshta (abdominal and thoracic viscera), Asthi (bones) and Marma (some vital parts of the body like brain).

3. Nirgundi Oil
