Description

Digestion-related problems are increasing nowadays due to unhealthy diet and lifestyle, among them, diarrhea is very common. It can be due to some infection, contaminated food, or some underlying disease. Respiratory problems like cough, breathing problems are also very common, and for all these problems Ayurveda has been providing natural herbal formulations. Among them, asava and arishta are one of the ayurvedic formulations used in many health issues. Here in this article, we are going to discuss one of the Ayurvedic arishta formulations – Babularisht.

Introduction

Babularisht is an ayurvedic arishta formulation prepared from the Babool chhal (Acacia nilotica) and some other herbs. This is a classical ayurvedic medicine and is used in the management of diarrhea, respiratory problems, tuberculosis, asthma, blood disorders, urinary disorders, etc. This formulation pacifies the Kapha dosha, acts as a good expectorant and cures chronic cough. It also improves digestive power.

  1. Babool chhal (Acacia nilotica) – 200 parts
  2. Dhatki Pushpa (Woodfordia fruticosa) – 16 parts
  3. Pippali (Piper longum) – 2 parts
  4. Jaiphal (Myristica fragrans) – 1 part
  5. Laung (Syzygium aromaticum) – 1 part
  6. Shital chini (Cubeba fructus) – 1 part
  7. Dalchini (Cinnamomum zeylanicum)  – 1 part
  8. Badi Elaichi (Amomum subulatum) – 1 part
  9. Tejpatra (Cinnamomum tamala) – 1 part
  10. Nagkeshar (Mesua ferrea) – 1 part

Description Of Ingredients

  1. Babool Chhal (Acacia nilotica) –belongs to the Leguminosae family. Properties of babool chhal are – Rasa – kashaya (astringent), Guna – guru (heavy), ruksha (dry), Virya – sheeta (cold), Vipaka – katu (pungent), balances Kapha doshas. It has anti-helminthic, anti-malarial, antimicrobial, antioxidants, and astringent properties.
  2. Dhatki Pushpa (Woodfordia fruticosa) belongs to the Lythraceae family. Properties of Dhataki Pushpa are  – Rasa – kashaya (astringent), Guna – Laghu (light), ruksha (dry), Virya – katu (pungent), balances Kapha and pitta doshas. It has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, immunomodulatory, and antidiarrheal properties.
  3. Pippali (Piper longum) – belongs to the Piperaceae family. Properties of Pippali are –  Rasa – Katu (pungent), Guna – Laghu (light), tikshna (piercing), Virya – Ushna (hot),  Vipaka – Madhura (sweet), balances Vata and Kapha doshas. Pippali has antioxidant, immunostimulant, anti-microbial, aphrodisiac, and anti-aging properties and is also used as Rasayana.
  4. Jaiphal (Myristica fragrans) – belongs to the Myristicaceae family. Properties of Jaiphal are – Rasa – katu (pungent), tikta (bitter), kashaya (astringent), Guna – laghu (light), Snigdha (unctuous), tikshna (piercing), Virya – ushna (hot), Vipaka – katu (pungent), balances Kapha and Vata doshas. It has analgesic, expectorant, stimulant, anticonvulsant, digestive, carminative, astringent, anthelmintic, aphrodisiac, and tonic properties.
  5. Laung (Syzygium aromaticum) – belongs to the Myrtaceae family. Properties of Laung are – Rasa – katu, tikta, Guna – laghu, tikshna, snigdha, Virya – sheeta, Vipaka – katu, balances Kapha and Pitta doshas. It has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, aphrodisiac, diuretic, digestive stimulant, and carminative properties.
  6. Shital Chini (Cubeba fructus) – belongs to the Piperaceae family, also known as Kabab chini. The properties of Shital chini are – Rasa – katu, tikta, Guna – laghu, ruksha, tikshna, Virya – ushna, Vipaka – katu, balances Kapha and Vata doshas. It has anti-inflammatory, wound healing, digestive stimulant, laxative, expectorant, and aphrodisiac properties.
  7. Dalchini (Cinnamomum zeylanicum)  – belongs to the Lauraceae family, the properties of dalchini are – Rasa – katu (pungent), Madhur (sweet), tikta (bitter), Guna – laghu (light), ruksha (dry), tikshna (piercing), Virya – ushna (hot), Vipaka – katu (pungent), balances Vata and Kapha dosha. It has anti-inflammatory, antioxidants, anti-microbial, anti-clotting, diuretic, antispasmodic, and aphrodisiac properties.
  8. Badi Elaichi (Amomum subulatum) – belongs to the Zingiberaceae family. The properties of Badi Elaichi are – Rasa – katu (pungent), tikta (bitter), Guna – laghu (light), ruksha (dry), Virya – ushna (hot), Vipaka – katu (pungent), balances Kapha and Vata doshas. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, antioxidants, and digestive stimulant properties.
  9. Tejpatra (Cinnamomum tamala) –  belongs to the Lauraceae family. The properties of Tejpatra are – Rasa – Madhur, katu, tikta, Guna – laghu, ruksha, tikshna, Virya – ushna , Vipaka – katu, balances Kapha and Vata doshas. It has appetizer, digestive, diuretic, diaphoretic, and anti-inflammatory properties.
  10. Nagkeshar (Mesua ferrea) – belongs to the Guttifereae family. The properties of Nagkeshar are – Rasa – kashaya, tikta, Guna – laghu, ruksha, Virya – ushna, Vipaka – katu, balances Kapha and Pitta doshas.
  11. Kali Maricha (Piper nigrum) –  belongs to the Piperaceae family. The properties of kali maricha are – Rasa –  katu (pungent), Guna – laghu (light), tikshna (sharp), sukshma (minute), Virya  – ushna (hot), Vipaka –  katu (pungent), balances Kapha, and Vata doshas. It has antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anthelmintic, analgesics, antispasmodic, antipyretic, anti-cancer, antidiarrheal, carminative, and anti-diabetic properties.
  12. Gur (Saccharum officinarum) – Gur or jaggery is mainly used in Indian kitchens and also in various Ayurvedic formulations. Jaggery or Gur has many health benefits. It increases the volume of urine and feces and is also good for the heart, promotes good digestion, and purifies the blood

Method Of Preparation

  • Prepare a decoction from Babul chhal (bark) and water. Then leave this decoction for cooling and filter the decoction.
  • When the decoction is slightly warm, add the rest of the above-mentioned ingredients.
  • After mixing all ingredients, put them in an earthen pot or asava vessel and seal the vessel or pot with a clay-smeared cloth.
  • Leave the vessel as it is for 30 days.
  • After 30 days, filter the Babularisht and preserve it in air-tight glass bottles or food-grade bottles for further use.

Medicinal Properties

Babularisht is an ayurvedic arishta formulation made with herbal ingredients. This formulation mainly balances the Kapha dosha. It has antitussive, mucolytic, anti-inflammatory, antihemorrhagic, styptic, and digestive stimulant properties. It reduces the mucus production in the lungs and has mucolytic action.
