Oral Health is an important window of our overall health as the problems of the mouth can affect the deeper organs and tissues of the body. Ayurveda has already acknowledged a link between overall health and oral health for thousands of years. Good oral health means that the teeth and gums remain as intact as possible.

Teeth are actually the byproduct of the bone tissue which means that the health of teeth can be directly linked to the health of the bones and like other tissues, the teeth can be injured.

Ayurvedic oral hygiene practices supports detoxification, encourages optimal digestive strength and bolster the immunity as well.

Gum diseases begin with the formation of plaque, a sticky product, which is formed due to food particles, saliva, and bacteria. The bacteria produce toxins which makes the gums tender and red which bleeds while brushing the teeth. When this plaque is not removed, it gets hardened into tartar.

WHAT IS THE AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE ON ORAL HEALTH?

Ayurveda is based on three doshas- Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each dosha has five subtypes that carry out specific physiological functions. Oral health depends on the subtype of Kapha dosha known as Bodhaka Kapha.

The Functions Of Bodhaka Kapha Are

  • The main function of Kapha dosha is lubrication. So, Bodhak Kapha lubricates the oral tissues and prevents friction between them.
  • It also regulates oral bacteria.
  • Bodhak Kapha maintains optimal oral temperature and supports immune function, via the tonsils.

When Bodhak Kapha is imbalanced or vitiated, not only our oral health is affected but whole of the kapha systems throughout the body is affected.

SOME COMMON TYPES OF GUM DISEASES ARE

1. Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a common type of gum disorder that causes redness, irritation and swelling of the gingiva (part of the gum around the base of the teeth). In some conditions, it may lead to tooth loss.

Symptoms Of Gingivitis Are:

  • Gums bleed easily while brushing or flossing.
  • Receding Gums
  • Dusky red or dark red gums
  • Bad breath
  • Swollen or puffy gums.

2. Pyorrhoea

Pyorrhoea is the second most common type of disease worldwide after dental decay. It is a type of gum disorder that is caused due to inflammation which affects the periodontium. Periodontium are the tissues that surround and supports teeth.

Symptoms Of Pyorrhoea Are:

  • Redness or bleeding from the gums while brushing teeth
  • Bleeding while biting hard food
  • A large gap between the teeth that progresses with time

SOME HOME REMEDIES FOR TOOTH AND GUM CARE ARE

1. Oil Pulling

Oil pulling means mouth gargling with oil.

Oil pulling should be done with warm sesame oil, not with coconut oil. For gargling, a tablespoon of sesame seed is made into a paste and add this to a cup of lukewarm water. This mixture should be used for gargling.

Coconut oil has the properties such as cold, sweet and heavy that will create an imbalance of Kapha dosha as according to Ayurveda, the qualities of Kapha dosha are:

shloka, kapha dosha

Snighda– oily, unctuous, Sheeta – cold, Guru – heavy, Manda – mild, viscous, Shalakshna – smooth, clear, Mrutsana – slimy, jelly, Sthira – stability, immobility.

All these are the qualities of Kapha dosha. Coconut Oil has the same qualities. If coconut oil is used for oil pulling, it will further aggravate the condition. So, sesame oil is considered as best for oil pulling.

2. Honey

Take 250 ml water and add a teaspoonful of honey. This mixture is very beneficial in gum problems. Instead of taking morning tea, you can take this drink. It acts both in prevention and treating dental problems.

3. Rock Salt

Take 1 gm finely powdered rock salt and mix 1/2-1 teaspoonful of mustard oil to it to make a paste. Apply this mixture on the gums and massage gently. Rinse the mouth with warm water. This remedy is very effective for swollen gums, bleeding gums, pyorrhea, toothache etc.
