About Antioxidants

Antioxidants are substances which help to protect our body from the free radical damage. Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E act as very good reducing agents which neutralize the effect of these harmful free radicles. Free radicles are the molecules which are produced in the body by the breakdown of food and as a by-product of day to day metabolic processes. All the vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, herbs, and spices are rich in high content of antioxidants. Flavonoid, tannins, lignans, and phenols are the naturally occurring antioxidants.

Free Radicals:-

All the atoms are surrounded by electrons. Electrons surround the atoms in a layer called shells. Each shell is filled by a selected number of electrons. If the outer shell of an atom is not filled by electron then it combines with other atom and completes its outer shell. These types of atoms are known as free radicles which cause oxidative damage in our body.

Free radicles affect the various systems of the body including the heart, liver, kidneys, central nervous system, and gastrointestinal system. Free radicals mostly cause the tissue damage, compromise the immune system, and play a vital role in aging. Due to bad eating habits, our body produces a huge amount of free radicals and these free radicals causes the damage to our DNA, which is one of the reasons for cancer cell development in our body.
