TYPES OF SPORTS INJURIES

Any sports when played can lead to sports injuries can be due to sports accidents, fatigue, loss in stability etc. Following are the types:-

  1. Sprains – These are the injuries which occur due to the overstretching or tearing of the ligaments. ligaments are the connective tissues which are responsible to connect two bones in a joint or one joint to the other.
  2. Strains – Strains are the injuries in which there is tearing overstretching of the tendons, which are thick and fibrous tissue cords which connects the muscles to the bone.
  3. Fractures – When the continuity of the bones is broken is known as fractures it can also be different types, can be mild like hairline fractures or severe like greenstick fractures.
  4. Dislocations – When a bone is dislocated from its original position is known as dislocation injuries.
  5. Swollen muscles – Inflammation and swelling of the muscles due to any thrust or injury is known as swollen muscles.
  6. Injuries due to overuse – Tendons, ligaments, bones or muscles are overused over a period of time can cause microtrauma and slowly can lead to pain and inflammation of the affected area.

SYMPTOMS OF SPORTS INJURIES

Sports injuries can have different types of symptoms which are mentioned below:

  1. Pain – It is the first and foremost seen symptom of a sports injury, It can be acute but if this pain does not subsides one should consult the physician. Sometimes the symptom of pain is delayed which means which is a typical symptom of overuse injuries.
  2. Swelling – It is one of the 4 signs of inflammation, It can cause discomfort and interfere with the movements. It can be of effusion type which is swelling of the joint, edema which is swelling of the soft tissues or Hematoma i.e swelling due to bleeding into the soft tissues.
  3. Stiffness – Stiffness can cause limited range of motion, Inflammation can lead to stiffness mainly in the ligament or tendon injuries It can be an indication for how severe the injury is.
  4. Instability – When there is ligament or tendon injury it can make the joint feel loose like in the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee. The injured joint is not supported well.
  5. Numbness or Tingling – This numbness or tingling sensation can be due to the irritation or damage to the nerve. If the nerve is injured or damaged it can lead to the loss of movement of that area and can be a major problem.
  6. Redness – It can be due to inflammation or abrasion at the injury site or an infection. It can be treated as Inflammation.

INJURIES ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA

According to the acharya sushruta Sports injuries can be taken under the asthi bhagna (Bone fractures), Asthitoda (Pain in bones), Bhagna (Discontinuity of tissues), Mamsagatvata (Pain in muscles) sandhimukta (Joint dislocation), snayugata vata (Injury of ligament and tendons).

Acharya Sushruta has indicated Agnikarma when there is the injury of ligaments, joints and bones i.e. deeper structures of the body but when there is the involvement of the twak (skin), mansa (Muscles), sira (Blood vessels) then it should be treated with raktamokshan. Marma therapy with the ayurvedic medicines has been indicated to strengthen the tissues of the body.

Acharya agabhatta has mentioned that when a person exercises more than his ability his health or body deteriorates like a lion pulling a weight which is more than his weight. So over-exercising can also lead to injuries like sprain, strain or overuse injuries.

TREATMENT OF SPORTS INJURIES IN AYURVEDA

Many types of treatment protocols are mentioned in the ayurveda to manage sports injuries such as:

  1. Lepan/ Alepa/ Upanaha – Herbal paste or ointment is applied on the affected area which helps in managing pain and promotes tissue healing process.
  2. Raktamokshana – Bloodletting from the veins, It helps in detoxifying the blood, relieves pain instantly and also helps in restoring normal function of the heart.

THE CAPSULE IS A FORMULATION THAT CONSISTS OF:

  11. Kustha (Saussurea lappa) – This herb is used for the treatment of skin diseases, Improves complexion of the skin.

  23. Usheera (Vetiveria zizanioides) – It helps in pacifying the vata and pitta dosha from the body, It has been classified in group (Varnya) which is used for improving complexion, dahaprashmana (Herbs relieving burning sensation) etc.
  24. Yavagraja (Hordeum vulgare) – It can be used in excessive thirst, helps in pacifying kapha and pitta dosha. It is a grain so can be included in diet as it has many nutrients and provides nourishment to the body. It has scrapping properties.
  25. Talispatra (Abies webbiana) – It helps in relieving ama dosha so relieves low digestion power. It is helpful in relieving the kapha and vata dosha from the body so it will act as a painkiller.

3. CISSUS POWER CAPSULE

This is a single herbal formulation which is a patent of planet ayurveda. It is helpful in strengthening the joints, tendon or ligament injury, Fractures or inflammatory joints etc. It contains Hadjod (Cissus quadrangularis), a stem used for this formulation and which helps in balancing the vata and kapha dosha. 4. JATYADI TAILAM

  1. Chameli (Jasminum officinale) – It has been classically indicated in treating wounds, toxic conditions, skin diseases, blood disorders such as abscess, skin disorders, etc. It can also be used in boils and blisters etc.
  2. Neem (Azadirachta indica) – It has antibiotic, antifungal properties, due to its drying mature it helps in cleaning up the moisture from the wounds, It is a vranahara i.e. it helps in quick healing of the wounds and can be used in numerous skin diseases.
  3. Patol patra (Stereospermum chelonoides) – It has bitter taste so it helps in purifying blood and detoxifies any impurity from the blood. Can be used in skin disorders and burning sensation of skin.
  4. Beeswax (Cera alba) – It can be used externally on wounds for a quicker healing process. It is also used for the treatment of fractures. It is also used as a base for ointents.
  5. Mulethi (Glycyrrhiza glabra) – It has classified under the groups of herbs such as jeevaniya (Herbs promoting longevity), sandhaneeya (Herbs used to heal bone fracture and wound healing), shonita sthapana (Herbs used to stop bleeding) etc. It helps in rehabilitation of the injuries and purifies blood.
  6. Kushtha (Sausurrea lappa) – This herb is really good for the skin, it helps in treating various kinds of skin disorders. Its oil extract is used as an antiinflammatory and as an analgesic.
  7. Haridra (Curcuma longa) – It is a powerful antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory. It acts as a lekhniya agent that means it helps in scrapping of the dead tissue from the body. It is also good for skin as it helps in relieving skin disorders. It is also good for removing toxins from the body.
  8. Daruharidra (Berberis aristata) – It is helpful as a lekhaniya agent i.e has scrapping properties so it will help in scraping the dead tissues from the wound. It has antitoxic properties. It has drying properties so it will help in relieving moisture and also helps in wound healing.

  16. Sariva (Hemidesmus indicus) – It is useful in skin diseases, itching, pruritus, etc. Helps in relieving ama dosha from the body and acts as an anti-toxic agent.
  17. Naktamla beeja (Pongamia pinnata) – It is used to relieve itching and has a bitter, pungent and astringent taste and also helps in balancing the kapha and vata dosha from the body.
  18. Sesame oil (Sesamum indicum) – It is the base for this oil which helps in pacifying the vata dosha hence helps in relieving the pain, dryness or itching of the area. It gets absorbed easily and enters the body channels very quickly.

5. ORTHOVITA OIL

It is an oil for local application which is used for strengthening the bones and joints of the body. It is also good for relieving the inflammation and pain of the injuries. THE OIL IS A FORMULATION THAT CONSISTS OF:

  1. Shul gajendra oil – This oil is the best oil for pain relieving of the ortho conditions. It will help in relieving pain related to the sprain, strains, fractures etc.
  2. Gandhapura oil (Gaultheria procumbens) – Volatile oil of this herb is used for the formulation which is very useful in pain relieving as it balances vata and kapha dosha. It acts as an anti-inflammatory, analgesic and carminative agent.
  3. Turpentine oil – This oil is extracted from herb Gandhabiroj (Pinus longifolia), Local application of this oil can be used for pain relieving such as orthostatic pains. It helps in stopping bleeding by constricting the blood vessels or capillaries.
  4. Saindhav oil – It has many ingredients and the main ingredient is rock salt with the base of sesame oil, Its main use is for the deep sinuses, blisters, abscess etc.
  5. Prasarini oil – This oil is used for the treatment of joint pains such as Rheumatoid arthritis, sciatica, neck pain, stiffness etc. It is also used for neuro muscular pains and shoulder dislocation. Massage with this oil will be helpful in stiffness of the joints and paralysis.
