WHAT IS MIGRAINE?

Migraine is the condition which is characterized by severe intense pain or a pulsing sensation on the one side of head. It is often associated with vomiting, nausea and extreme sensitivity to light. Migraine attacks results in the significant pain from hours to days. Warning symptoms may include the blind spots, flashes of light and tingling on one side of face or in arms or legs.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF MIGRAINE?

Migraine usually starts in childhood, adolescence and early adulthood. Migraine has four stages – prodrome, aura, headache and post drome though it is not necessary one experiences all the stages.

1. Prodrome

This is the first stage which occurs before one or two day of migraine. Symptoms may include:

  • Constipation
  • Mood swings like depression or elation
  • Yawning
  • Increased thirst
  • Stiffness in neck
  • Excess urination

2. Aura

Mostly people may experience migraine without aura. It occurs before or during migraines. Symptoms of this stage are associated with visual disturbances.

3. Attack

Migraine lasts from few hours to 2-3 days with headache.  Frequency of headache may vary from person to person.

  • Pain on the one or both sides of head.
  • Pain which feels pulsing or throbbing
  • Sensitivity to sounds and light.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Spinning head.

4. Post drome

It is final stage of migraine attack and symptoms may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Confusion
  • Mood swings
  • Sensitivity of light and sound

AYURVEDIC VIEW

According to Ayurveda cause of migraine is the aggravation of pitta dosha. There are various factors like our life style and improper eating habits leads to vitiation of pitta dosha. Imbalanced pitta dosha results in the impairment of digestion which causes the production of toxins (ama). These toxins get accumulated in the manovahi strotas (mind channels), become the cause of pain in migraine.

From the ayurvedic perspective to treat the migraine, there is need to pacify the aggravated pitta dosha.

According to Ayurveda, sensitive nervous system is responsible for lowering the ojas (energy) in the body. Ojas (energy) provides the strength to nervous system and over all body. So low ojas causes the problems like migraine.
