Introduction

Jai Shree Dhanwantharam Oil by Planet Ayurveda is a traditional Ayurvedic medicated oil prepared according to the principles of Dhanwantari Taila, a classical formulation referenced in Sahasrayogam, Taila Yoga Prakarana. It is primarily used for Abhyanga (therapeutic oil massage) and may also be incorporated into suitable Panchakarma procedures. The oil is traditionally valued for supporting Vata balance, neuromuscular function, joint flexibility, and overall tissue nourishment. It is particularly considered useful for women during the postnatal period and for individuals experiencing weakness, debility, stiffness, or Vata-related musculoskeletal concerns. Regular therapeutic massage provides unctuousness and warmth to the body and may promote relaxation and comfortable movement. Its nourishing profile also makes it suitable as part of traditional Ayurvedic routines aimed at maintaining strength, vitality, and physical well-being.

(Sahasrayogam- Taila Prakarana)

The verse describes the preparation and therapeutic applications of Dhanwantari Taila. A decoction is prepared using Bala root, Yava, Kola, Kulattha, and Dashamoola, which is then combined with sesame oil and a range of medicinal herbs prepared as a fine paste. Ingredients such as Meda, Mahameda, Daruharidra, Manjishtha, Kakoli, Chandana, Sariva, Kushtha, Tagara, Jivaka, Rishabhaka, Saindhava, Shailaja, Aguru, Punarnava, Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Yashtimadhu, Shatāhva, Shurpaparni, Ela, Tvak, and Patra, along with milk and other prescribed liquids, are incorporated and cooked over a gentle fire until properly processed. The resulting oil is described as capable of alleviating Vata disorders (Vata-related diseases) and is particularly valued for postpartum women, children, conditions involving vital structures, bone injuries, and states of weakness or tissue depletion. It is also traditionally described as beneficial in fever, abdominal masses, seizure-like disorders, mental disturbances, urinary obstruction, intestinal enlargement, gynaecological disorders, and emaciation or wasting. The verse regards this preparation as a formulation favoured by Dhanwantari and emphasises its broad nourishing and Vata-pacifying therapeutic utility.

Modern Researches

For Sciatica

A clinical study published in the International Journal of Ayurveda and Pharma Research in 2021 evaluated the efficacy of Dhanwantaram Taila administered through Matra Basti and Kati Basti in patients with Gridhrasi (sciatica). The study included 45 patients aged 16–50 years, randomly divided into three groups of 15 each. Group A received Matra Basti with 75 ml Dhanwantaram Taila, Group B received Kati Basti with 100 ml oil, and Group C received both therapies for 9 consecutive days. Assessment was based on pain (Ruk), pricking sensation (Toda), twitching (Spandana), numbness (Supti), heaviness (Gourava), tenderness, and the Straight Leg Raising (SLR) test. The combined-treatment group showed the greatest improvement, with relief of Ruk 73%, Toda 46%, Spandana 60%, Supti 80%, Gourava 73%, tenderness 73.3%, and SLR 60%. Matra Basti and Kati Basti alone produced comparatively lower improvements in several parameters. The authors attributed the better response to the combined Snehana and Vata-pacifying actions of the two procedures with Dhanwantaram Taila. Overall, the study concluded that combining Matra Basti and Kati Basti with Dhanwantaram Taila provided greater symptomatic relief in Gridhrasi than either procedure alone.

Conclusion

Jai Shree Dhanwantharam Oil is a classical Ayurvedic medicated oil valued for its nourishing, strengthening, and rejuvenating properties. Its Vata-balancing nature makes it particularly suitable for supporting the muscles, joints, nerves, and overall musculoskeletal system. It can be incorporated into Abhyanga and other appropriate Ayurvedic therapies to promote flexibility, comfort, and tissue nourishment. With its broad traditional applications, Jai Shree Dhanwantharam Oil serves as a versatile formulation for maintaining physical strength, vitality, and well-being. Regular therapeutic use may also support relaxation, mobility, and recovery from physical strain and weakness. Its rich herbal composition makes it a valuable addition to traditional Ayurvedic wellness and Panchakarma practices.
