WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF EAR PROBLEMS ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA?

In Ayurveda, it is believed that ear problems occur due to the vitiation of Vata dosha which results in damage to the auditory nerve and nerve endings.

Master Charak has explained the qualities of Vata dosha in the 12th chapter of Charak Samhita Sutrasthana.

vata dosha qualities, ayurveda, shloka

According to Ayurveda, the qualities of Vata dosha are:

  • Rooksha – Dryness
  • Laghu – Lightness
  • Sheeta – Coldness
  • Daruna – Instability
  • Khara – Coarseness, Roughness
  • Chala – Movement

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF EAR PROBLEMS?

1. Ear Infections

Ear infections cause irritation and pain. Children are more prone to ear infections. In ear infection, the majority of the inner ear is being filled with the fluid which results in the feeling of additional pressure in the ear. Consumption of meals rich in sugar or fat and dairy products further aggravate the condition because ear fluid becomes congested. There is a possibility that sinus congestion travels through Eustachian tube which stops the ear drainage which results in ear infection.

2. Ear Ache

Ear ache is generally caused due to the inflammation in the middle ear, eczema, boils or neuralgia in the outer ear.

It is a common auditory affliction and the treatment is based on the cause of the ache.

3. Tinnitus

In Ayurveda, tinnitus is known as Karnanada. Karna means ear and Nada means sound.

In Ayurveda, tinnitus is considered as another condition of ear disease where patient feels an unnatural sound. This condition is known as Karnakshweda. In Karnakshweda, a patient listens the sound similar to the flute which is originated due to the debility or fatigue or a result of diminished strength of auditory nerves. So, it can be co-related with Nerve deafness.

4. Discharge From The Ear

Due to eczema, boils or irritation following a foreign body or wax, there is some discharge from the external ear.

In the absence of these factors, ear discharge may be due to chronic suppuration in the middle ear due to infection or injury of the drum.

The discharge may be yellow or thick when the condition is acute and it may turn to watery or thin as it improves.

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT OF EAR DISORDERS ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA?

Since the root cause of Ear disorders is Vata imbalance so all the measures for Vata pacification are indicated.

VATA PACIFYING DIET INCLUDES

1. Ghrit

Ghee is known as ‘Ghrit’ in Ayurveda. Ghee, especially cow’s ghee is very useful in the vitiation of Vata dosha. So, 1-2 teaspoons of cow’s ghee per day should be taken as it pacifies Vata dosha and gives strength to the nerves.
