About Atopic Dermatitis in Infants
Atopic Dermatitis is a long-term chronic inflammation of the skin. It causes itchy skin in infants. This condition is more common in babies as well as in children as compared to adults. It usually first appears between ages 3 to 6 months.
Causes of Atopic Dermatitis in Infants
Various factors are known to contribute to eczema flare ups, yet the etiology of this disease is not understood by the modern science. The cause of this disease in infants is hereditary. If someone in family suffers from this disease, then the rest of the family is at a very high risk of developing this disease. Genetic predisposition is surely one of the internal causes for the development of atopic dermatitis.
Furthermore, the inflammatory process in the skin may be caused by a variety of serious problems in the immune system. These include the reduction in the activity of T-lymphocytes and increasing the number of B-lymphocytes. Many physicians agree that there is a link between atopic dermatitis and asthma or hay fever. This is the reason doctors will monitor the children with eczema for a future development of asthma or hay fever.
The science of Ayurveda classifies childhood ailments from their etio-pathogenesis and suggests management of the condition according to its cause, signs and symptoms.
According to Ayurveda, infancy is a Kapha prominent age. It is preventable as well as treatable according to Ayurveda. In fact, the best method available to mothers is nutrition. Breastfeeding is the best possible method for developing immunity in infants. While breastfeeding, it is important for the mother to make conscious and suitable dietary choices in order to reduce the inflammation inside her own body which in turn increases the baby’s immunity to cope with allergens and outside environmental factors.
Symptoms of Atopic Dermatitis in Infants
- Infant eczema usually appears as patches of flaky, red skin in very visible places, including baby’s cheeks, behind the ears and on the scalp.
- If left untreated, it may spread to the elbow, behind the knees.
- It looks different from baby to baby but in general the flaky skin gets redder with small pimples, filled with fluid and burst.
- Itching is common.
The cortisone creams only suppress the symptoms but not cure the disease. In contrast, Ayurvedic treatment focusses on the root cause of the disease. According to Ayurveda, there is often an immunological and emotional component connected to skin conditions that should also be considered and addressed.
