Ascites Care pack

Ascites is accumulation of more than 25 ml of fluid in the peritoneal cavity. The color of the fluid is pale yellow and it is known as ascitic fluid. The main cause of ascitic fluid is liver cirrhosis and the other may include cancer, kidney diseases and congestive cardiac failure. In this the patient is having abdominal distension and discomfort, increased weight and shortness of breath.

What Are The Types of Ascites?

Due to the amount of SAAG (Serum – Ascites – Albumin – Gradient) present, it is of following types :-

1. Exudative

In this type, the amount of SAAG is low and the main causes are :-

• Cancer
• Infection
• Pancreatitis
• Hereditary angioedema
• Nephrotic syndrome
• Serositis

2. Transudative

In this type , the amount of SAAG is high and the causes are :-

• Liver cirrhosis
• CHF (Congestive heart failure)
• Protein energy malnutrition (Kwashiorkor)
• Constrictive pericarditis
• Hepatovenous occlusion

Imbalance of Dosha’s in Ascites?

रुद्ध्वास्वेदाम्बुवाहिनीदोषाःस्त्रोतांसिसंचिताः। प्राणाग्न्यपानान्संदूष्यजनयन्त्युदरंनृणाम्।।

As per Ayurveda, all the diseases are caused by imbalance in doshas (vata, pitta, kapha). We can correlate Ascites with jalodar. It is mainly due to vitiation of vatadosha along with kaphaand pitta dosha. The vitiated doshasthen affect the dhatusmainly rasa, rakta and Udakavehstrotas. The affected strotas gets obstructed that leads to accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity (udara).
