GUDHAL: INTRODUCTION

Gudhal (Hibiscus) is an evergreen shrub with immense medicinal value. The dark green leaves of the Gudhal plant, its root, and large flowers — especially red Hibiscus — are widely used in Ayurveda as well as Chinese medicine.

The scientific name of Gudhal is Hibiscus rosa sinensis.

The Hibiscus species belong to the Malvaceae family. These species are native to China. Hibiscus is grown as an ornamental plant in gardens and houses in India, China, and several other tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world.

It is known as ‘Gudhal’ in Hindi, ‘Japa Pushpa’ in Sanskrit; ‘Semparuthi’, ‘Gul-e-Gurhal’, and ‘Jabha’, etc. in other languages. The flowers of the plant are called Chinese hibiscus, China rose, Hawaiian hibiscus, or Shoe flower.

The most popularly grown Gudhal or Hibiscus plant bears red-coloured flowers, which holds many proven medicinal properties. These flowers can also be found in other colours like orange, pink, yellow, peach, and white. They are edible and are consumed in different ways, particularly in the form of tea extracts or with buttermilk in summers.

The medicinal value of Gudhal or Hibiscus has been explained in ancient Ayurvedic texts. In modern times, a research has confirmed that Hibiscus has abundant and beneficial amounts of Vitamin C, antioxidants, flavonoids, anthocyanin pigment, pectin, cyanidin diglucoside, carotene, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, malic acid, linolenic acid, and ascorbic acid.
