PLANTAGO OVATA
Plantago Ovata is commonly known as Blond Psyllium. The other names of the herb are Dietary Fiber, Englishman’s Foot, Indian Plantago , Blond Plantago, Che Qian Zi, Ipágula, Isabgola, Isabgul, Ispagol, Pale Psyllium, Plantaginis Ovatae Semen, Plantaginis Ovatae Testa, Plantago decumbens, Plantago ispaghula, Blond, Psyllium, Psyllium Husk, Sand Plantain, Spogel, Ispaghula, Psilio and Psillium.
This plant has been mentioned in Persian and Arabic medicinal historical books that date back to the 10th century. It was introduced in India only by the Arabs.
CHARACTERISTICS OF PLANTAGO OVATA
The Plantago Ovata is native to parts of Western Asia, Pakistan, China, Russia and India. This annual medicinal herb has erect stems and narrow leaves. The leaves are lance shaped, hairy and have indents on them. They also have vertical and parallel lines all over. The white flowers have cylindrical spikes and the seeds are pink or grayish brown in color. They look like small ovular boats and can measure up to 2 mm.
The major parts of Plantago Ovata that are used in making medicines include its seed with the outer coating, ripened dried seeds and powdered granular solutions made from the seed.
DOSAGE OF PLANTAGO OVATA
- Capsules: One or two capsules before meals should be consumed with a large glass of water. The capsules made from the Plantago Ovata are usually up to 8 cm long.
- Powdered sachet: Dilute one to two sachets with the meal.
- Granules: Granular Plantago Ovata can be consumed. 3 teaspoons of this mixture must be consumed with water.
