Introduction

Description of The Ingredients

Each and every ingredient contribute to the effects and medicinal property of this formulation so we will be discussing about the medicinal properties of each ingredient:

1. Vasa

Leaves of the vasa are used in this asava which has a bitter and astringent taste. It is light to digest, drying in nature and undergoes pungent taste conversion after digestion. It has a cold potency and also helps in balancing the kapha and pitta dosha. Due to its cold potency it will also help in treating bleeding disorder and due to its astringent taste it will balance the kapha dosha and will treat all the respiratory disorders.

2. Pippali

Fruits are used for making this formulation which has a pungent taste. It has a strong and piercing nature and light to digest. Taste conversion after digestion is sweet due to which it does not increase pitta dosha in excess as it has a hot potency. It helps in balancing the vata and kapha dosha from the body. It has rejuvenating properties and is very effective in treating the conditions such as cough and cold due to its hot potency.

3. Choti elaichi

It has been classified in the group of herbs such as shwasahara (Herbs used in treating asthma and dyspnoea), Shirovirechnopag (Herbs used in nasya treatment). It has a pungent and sweet taste, which is light to digest and has a drying effect. It undergoes pungent taste conversion after digestion. Potency of ela is cold which balances the kapha and vata dosha. Due to its pungent taste and kapha balancing nature it will be good for treating respiratory disorders.

4. Sonth

Dried form of ginger is known as sonth. Which has a pungent taste and is light to digest. It undergoes sweet taste conversion after digestion and has a hot potency. It is very helpful in balancing the kapha dosha. It acts as an appetizer, Helps in improving digestion and is aphrodisian in nature. It is helpful in balancing the vata dosha. It also treats constipation.

5. Shital chini

It has a similar appearance as of the maricha, with a pungent and bitter taste. It is light to digest and is drying in nature. It has a strong and piercing nature and also has a pungent taste after digestion. Potency of shital chini is hot and is very helpful in reducing the vitiated kapha and vata dosha. It acts as a cardiac tonic and also helps in improving digestion and relieves ama dosha from the body.

6. Dalchini

Dalchini is pungent, bitter and sweet in taste also it is light to digest, dry, strong and piercing in nature. Due to its pungent taste and theekshana nature it has a hot potency and pungent taste conversion after digestion. It increases pitta dosha from the body and helps in increasing vata and kapha dosha from the body. Acharya sushruta has kept this herb in the category of eladi gana which means it has similar qualities to ela herb.

7. Tejpatra

Leaves of the plants are used in this formulation which has a pungent, bitter and sweet taste. It is light to digest with drying and strong nature. It undergoes pungent taste conversion after digestion and has a hot potency. It is also responsible for reducing the vitiated kapha and vata dosha and also increases the pitta dosha. It cleanses the oral cavity and also cleanses the oral cavity. It can be indicated in disorders such as piles, nausea, anorexia, rhinitis etc.

8. Sugandha Bala

It has been classified in subgroups such as sheeta prashmana (Cold relieving herbs), tikta skandha (Bitter tasting herbs). It has a pungent, bitter and astringent taste. It is light for digestion and has a slimy nature. It undergoes pungent taste conversion after digestion and also has a hot potency. It helps in balancing all the three doshas in the body. Root of this plant is used for making this formulation.

9. Nagkesar

It has an astringent and bitter taste which has a piercing, drying and light nature. Taste conversion after digestion is pungent and has a hot potency. It is helpful in balancing the kapha and pitta dosha. It is helpful in treating conditions such as gout, urinary tract disorders, fever, vomiting and headache etc. It is also useful in treating female infertility.

10. Kali maricha

Maricha will act as a deepniya (Increases digestive fire), Shulaprashmana (Analgesic), krumi ghana (Anti parasitic). It has sharp properties and light to digest with the pungent taste. Marich is hot in potency. Maricha is the best herb to reverse the sluggishness of the pranavaha srotas (Respiratory channels) and also reduce the secretion of the mucus. It helps in opening the channels of the body so facilitates the action of all the ingredients of the chitrak haritaki i.e. it acts as a catalyst.

11. Dhatki pushpa

Flowers of this plant are used in this formulation which has an astringent taste, is light to digest and has a drying nature. Potency of dhatki is cold with the pungent taste conversion after digestion and it also helps in balancing the kapha and pitta dosha from the body. It is mainly used for the fermentation of this formulation.

12. Gur

This is the sweetened substance which is made from the juice of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum). This is used for making asava and arishtas in ayurveda. It helps in increasing the volume of urine and feces and aged jaggery is very good for the heart and should be consumed regularly. This is also helpful in the fermentation of the asava and arishtas.

Method Of Preparation

Following method of preparation is used for making this formulation:

  1. First decoction of vasaka is made by grinding it and boiling it in water.
  2. All the other herbs are also grinded and added in this decoction.
  3. This is stored in a glass jar or a earthen pot for about 20-30 days till it gets fermented
  4. All the herbs are filtered out from this and liquid vasav is stored in an airtight container.
