Introduction
Lumpy Skin Disease is an infectious disease which affects cattles and is caused by a sheep pox virus. This condition affects economic implications as the affected animals may have longlife damage to the skin which lowers their commercial value. This condition first occurred as an epidemic in 1929 in Zambia, after that it spread all over Africa between 1950’s and 1980’s. In Bangladesh this condition occurs in 2019, in Pakistan it affects the cattles in Jan 2022 and in July 2022 it reaches India also. So further let’s discuss its causes, symptoms, epidemiology in detail.
Facts About Lumpy Skin Disease
- The condition occurs with Sheep pox virus.
- Commonly transmitted by ticks and insects with the infected saliva.
- Most common and distinctive feature of this condition is firm, widespread and painful nodules over the mucosal surfaces.
- Some antiviral vaccines may control the widespread.
Causes Of Lumpy Skin Disease
This condition has only one cause that we discussed earlier which is caused by sheep pox virus. So there is no other cause of this condition but some risk factors are there which make a cattle prone to this condition. These risk factors include: The condition occurs more often in wet summer weather, mostly affects the areas along water courses and some cases are seen on low ground and insects bites. So these are some of the risk factors that may lead to this infection most oftenly.
Symptoms Of Lumpy Skin Disease
Infected cattles can develop fever, nasal discharge, lacrimation and hypersalivation which is followed by eruptions over the skin in 50% of the cases. Its incubation period remains between 4 to 14 days. Nodules are characterized as round, firm, slightly raised, painful which involves the whole mucosa of Gi tract, genital tracts and respiratory tract. These nodules may occur within the buccal and nasal mucosa. Regional lymph nodes get swollen and cattles suffer from the edema which develops in the brisket, udder and legs.
Diagnosis Of Lumpy Skin Disease
Main diagnostic tests for this condition are histopathology, PCR or virus isolation. This disease may be confused with various conditions such as pseudo-lumpy skin disease which is caused by a virus bovine herpesvirus 2. Both these conditions are similar clinically but commonly the pseudo condition involves lesions on teats and udder so named as bovine herpes mammillitis. So it is necessary to differentiate this condition and to do so electron microscopy to be performed in the early skin lesions.
Ayurvedic View Of Lumpy Skin Disease
Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine which sees the whole nature equally whether it is a human being, animal or plant. As Ayurveda considers every disease results from dosha imbalance and the treatment option is only to balance these doshas. For animals Ayurveda mentioned pashu chikitsa.
Origin of pashu chikitsa
With the passage of time animals are becoming special and prior for humans as part of their family. So for their health maintenance Ayurveda develops Pashu Chikitsa (veterinary science in ayurveda). Go ayurveda (to cure diseases in cows) is one of the branches of Pashu Chikitsa which helps in managing the disease especially occuring in cows. They may suffer with a lot of conditions and one among them is Lumpy Skin Disease. Let’s see its Ayurvedic view below.
About Lumpy Skin Disease
As per Ayurveda we can correlate this condition to jeevanu janya vikara which means a disease caused by any virus. Such as in this condition sheep pox virus works in causing the condition which acts as agantuk karana. When this agantuk karana ingested into the body it leads to rakta dhatu vitiation and affects the immune system. Then various symptoms occur in the body such as fever, skin lesions, lymph node swelling and affects the mucous membrane of GI tract, respiratory tract and nasal mucosa too. So for relieving these symptoms as per ayurveda we can give various raktashodhak herbs and immune boosting herbs.
