Introduction
Kaf kuthar ras is an ayurvedic classical ras aushadhi preparation which means that it is made using metallic components and herbal components which makes it a herbo mineral formulation. It is mainly used in respiratory disorders as its name suggests kaf kuthar means it will treat disorders related to the kapha dosha.
Ingredients Used in Kaf Kuthar Ras
- Purified mercury
- Purified sulfur
- Sonth (Zingiber officinale)
- Pippali (Piper longum)
- Maricha (Piper nigrum)
- Loh bhasma (Iron calx)
- Tamra bhasma (Copper calx)
- Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum)
- Datura (Datura metel)
- Katuki (Picrorhiza kurroa)

Description Of The Ingredients
- Mercury : When mercury is processed and purified by the ways mentioned in the ayurveda then it is used for making many formulations. It has all the shadrasa (6 tastes) in it and having hot potency with unctuous, flowy and heavy to digest properties. Parad is helpful in balancing all the three doshas of the body. It is known as the mahavrishya means it is best known as aphrodisiac, rasayan due to its rejuvenating properties, yogavahi that means it can heighten the medicinal properties of any compound or herb with which it is added. It is also mentioned that it helps in increasing the intelligence, memory, lusture and strength of the body.
- Purified sulfur : Purified sulfur is pungent,bitter and astringent in taste and flowy in nature. Potency of the sulfur is hot and its taste conversion after the digestion is sweet. Sulfur acts as a great digestive, carminative, appetizer and also helps in eliminating the poison from the body. It is also said in ayurveda that there is no best compound other than sulfur in ayurveda in the group of uprasa. Sulfur will pacify the vata and kapha dosha from the body and increase the pitta dosha from the body so it will be helpful in treating respiratory disorders like cough, cold, asthma, bronchitis etc.
- Sonth : It is the dried form of the ginger which is very helpful in boosting the digestion and metabolism of the person as it has a pungent taste, is light to digest and dry in nature. It has strong and piercing properties and undergoes sweet taste conversion after digestion. Rhizome part of the plant is used for making this formulation. Sonth has medicinal properties like it acts as a digestive, carminative, increases appetite as it increases the pitta dosha in the body and acts as an expectorant due to its kapha balancing properties, so will be helpful in the conditions like cough, cold, asthma etc.
- Pippali : Also known as long pepper and its dried fruits are used for making this formulation. Pippali has a pungent taste. Light to digest and has a strong and piercing nature. Vipaka of pippali is sweet, which means it undergoes sweet taste conversion after digestion and potency of the dried piper longum is hot. Pippali helps in balancing the vata and kapha dosha so it will help in treating the disorders like asthma, COPD and other respiratory disorders. It can be given to the patients with irregular digestion and conditions like ascites, gulma (Abdominal tumor), piles etc. It relieves chronic lung diseases and tuberculosis.
- Maricha : Black pepper has a pungent taste and it is light to digest, with a strong and piercing nature. Maricha undergoes pungent taste conversion after digestion.
- Iron calx : Iron calx is made from the purified iron which has bitter, sweet and astringent taste and has properties like flowy, heavy and drying. Iron calx has scrapping properties so it will help in scrapping the kapha dosha from the channels of the body also it helps in increasing the strength of a person so can be given to the person with emaciation or Tb. It can be indicated in disorders like jaundice, anemia, emaciation, spleen disorders, cough, dyspnoea, fever etc.
- Copper calx : It is made from the purified and powdered copper and known as tamra bhasma and its taste is astringent, sweet, bitter and sour in taste with drying, sharp nature and it is light to digest. Potency of the tamra bhasma is hot with pungent taste conversion after digestion. It works as a potent antacid and mild laxative, stimulates the digestive system and lowers the bilirubin so due to these medicinal properties it can be used in cough, lung disorders, spleen or liver disorders, hiccups etc.
- Kantakari : Juice of the flowers is used for making this formulation and in ayurveda it has been classified in the groups like kasahara (Treating cough and cold), shothahara (Group of herbs possessing anti-inflammatory property), kanthaya (Good for throat) etc. Taste of the kantakari is pungent and bitter. Kantakari is light to digest, drying and piercing in nature due to which it helps in balancing the vata and kapha dosha also helps in increasing the pitta dosha. It is very good for the treatment of asthma and chronic respiratory disorders.
- Dhatura : Juice of the leaves of the datura are used for making this formulation. It is bitter and pungent in taste and is light to taste and also causes dryness in the body. Veerya of the Dhatura is hot (Hot potency) due to which it balances the kapha and vata dosha. As it balances the kapha dosha so also acts as an expectorant.
- Katuki : Leaf juice is used in this formulation which has bitter taste and pungent taste conversion after digestion. Potency of the kutki is cold and balances the kapha and pitta dosha. It is light to digest and drying in nature. It has been found by research that it acts as an anti-inflammatory , anti asthmatic and has an immuno-modulatory activity. It can be used in kasa shwasa, dyspnoea, etc.
Method Of Preparation
Following method of preparation is used for making this formulation which is mentioned below:
- Equal quantity of parad and gandhak are taken and kajjali is made of these.
- Then rest of the bhasma and chruna of maricha, pippali and sonth are added in this kajjali and mixed.
- After that juice of kantakari, datura and katuki is added one by one and bhavana is given to this mixture for some time.
- After that, tablets of 1-1 ratti are made, dried and stored.
Medicinal Properties
Following are the medicinal properties of the kaf kuthar ras:
- It is a medication which is teekshna (strong and piercing in nature).
- It helps in balancing the kapha dosha from the body.
- Due to the mercury and sulfur it will act as a rejuvenating agent and will be effective in tissue rejuvenation and regrowth.
- It acts as an expectorant as it has abhrak bhasma in it.
- It removes the blockages from the micro channels of the body.
Dosha Karma
It helps in pacifying and eliminating the kapha dosha from the body and also will balance the other doshas.
Dosage
It can be taken in the dose of 1-2 tablets with the paan (Piper betle) juice or honey. It can be taken with the other anupaan according to the disease of the person.
Classical Indication
In classical texts it has been indicated in disorders:
- Chronic cough
- Kaf vikar (Diseases originating from kapha dosha)
- Fever of kapha origin
Indications
It is indicated in all the kapha originating disorders as it will melt the kapha and eliminate the kapha from the channels of the body and treat conditions like all type of coughs also chronic cough, Tuberculosis, bronchitis, lethargy, feeling of heaviness in the chest, pain during coughing in chest, dyspnoea. Due to contents like pippali and sonth it will act in conditions like anorexia, heaviness in the throat. It can also be used in excessive sweating, mild fever, and frothy urine.
Side Effects
- It should be taken under the guidance of expert ayurvedic doctor.
- It can be dangerous if it is taken without the guidance of an ayurvedic doctor.
- It should be avoided in pregnant or lactating mothers and it should also be avoided in children.
- It can cause gastritis.
