Abstract
Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines, that causes ulcerations in our digestive tract as well as becoming swollen and irritated. It can affect anywhere from the mouth to the anus and shows symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhoea, loss of weight, vomiting and bleeding can be seen if inflammation is severe. It may also cause complications rather than GI Tract like joint pains (arthritis), rashes on skin, eyes infection, and may hamper focusing or concentration. In allopathy, this is a life-long condition that cannot be treated and get cured. However, in Ayurvedic medications this condition can be managed properly and patients may get relief for life- long. In this article we are going to discuss symptoms, causative factors and treatment of Crohn’s disease.
Introduction
Crohn’s disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease, causes inflammation of the digestive tract, which can further result in cramps, loose motions, weakness, loss of weight, and can occur in any part of the GI Tract. This condition is closely related to ulcerative colitis, which involves the colon, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are frequently called inflammatory bowel disease. Crohn’s disease is caused by many environmental, immunological and bacterial factors and leads to chronic inflammatory diseases, in which the body’s immunity affects the GI Tract that’s why it is traditionally been described as an Autoimmune disorder, but in recent times, experts called it an immune deficiency disorder. Crohn’s disease affects both males, and females equally. If your relative is already diagnosed with this disease then you have 10 times more chances to get Crohn’s disease and if your sibling is already affected by this disease then chances increase upto 30 times.
Causes
Crohn’s disease is caused by various factors like environmental, genetic preference. Experts say that our immune system starts affecting those substances that are actually harmless to our GI Tracts like good bacteria, food or many other substances and in results WBCs start gathering there and leads to inflammation which shows ulcers, sores and injuries to the intestines.

- Constipation – if intestinal obstruction is there.
- Check for fistula and fissure – Can be associated with severe infection and hard stool constipation.
- Low grade fever.
- Loss of weight.
- Weakness and fatigue.
- It may also cause complications outside of GI Tract like arthritic pain, rashes on skin, eyes infection, and may hamper focusing or concentration.
Diagnosis

According to the Ayurveda, Crohn’s disease can be correlated with Grahni roga, any disease that affects the intestines comes under the grahani rogas, this disease is caused by inflammation and vitition of Doshas. Stage and severity of the disease may vary as per the doshas’ predominance and involved part. In the classical texts the main cause behind this disease is Mandagni, adhyashan, anshana, vishamashan or apathya sevan. Management involves a strict diet regime and proper lifestyle with effective medications. If a patient is already taking modern medicines then the Ayurvedic practitioner must start his Ayurveda treatment clubbed and then gradually taper the Allopathic medications.
