About Nodular Prurigo
Nodular prurigo is a skin condition characterised by hard and itchy lumps (nodules) that are formed on the skin. The itching in the nodules is so intense that people scratch themselves and it results in bleeding or pain. Scratching can cause more lesions to appear. Itching is further worsened by heat, sweating or irritation from clothes.
It mainly affects forearms, legs and neck. It can affect other areas as well. There are multiple nodular skin lesions with tiny open wounds due to intense itching. They are found in groups which may vary from a few to a couple of hundreds.
Scratching, rubbing and pricking in the affected area may lead to the permanent changes to the skin like nodular thickening, hyperpigmentation and skin thickening in spots.
It can occur at any age but mainly in adults between the age group of 20-60 years. Both males and females are equally affected by this condition.
Symptoms of Nodular Prurigo
The main signs and symptoms of Nodular Prurigo are:
- Nodules are generally symmetric, discrete, hyper-pigmented, pruritic and firm.
- Excoriated lesions are flat or have crusted top.
- Nodule pattern may be follicular.
Pathophysiology of Nodular Prurigo
The chronic mechanical trauma of the skin leads to the thickening of the skin in proportion of the trauma. This cyclic trauma in the affected area mostly causes pigmentary changes in the skin.
Diagnosis of Nodular Prurigo
Nodular prurigo is diagnosed on observing the signs and symptoms such as extremely itchy skin with the formation of nodules. Skin biopsy is also done to confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment of Nodular Prurigo
Inspite of so many advancements in the field of medicine, treatment of this disease remains highly symptomatic. The treatment of nodular prurigo includes corticosteroid creams, cryotherapy, immunosuppressants but these treatments cause various side effects and do not cure the disease from its root.
In Ayurveda, no typical nomenclature has been found for this disease but considering all the signs and symptoms, it can be categorised as the disease caused due to the imbalance of all the three doshas having Vata-Kapha predominance.
