Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is a rare complication of ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is a disease of gastro-intestinal tract. In this the internal lining of the entire colon is eroded and leads to ulceration, which occurs due to improper lifestyle and dietary habits. Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a life threatening condition that arises due to the blood clot, present in the dural venous sinuses. Dural venous sinuses are channels present in between endosteal (the inner lining of skull bones) and dura matter (the outer meningeal layer that covers the brain and spinal cord). These venous sinuses collect blood from the brain, CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) from subarachnoid spaces and bring back the de-oxygenated blood to the heart via an internal jugular vein. This condition is very common in youngsters and in individuals who are suffering from ulcerative colitis. Symptoms include headache, blurred vision and person may end up with stroke hence difficult to diagnose in the initial stage.

CAUSES OF CEREBRAL VENOUS SINUS THROMBOSIS

• Hypertension – High blood pressure is a reason of hemorrhage that leads to clot formation.
• Thrombocytosis (elevated platelet level) – It is a condition that arises due to elevated platelet levels that may lead to blood coagulation.
• Ulcerative colitis – In ulcerative colitis bleeding from ulcers is a common symptom, there will be clot formation in the colon region. Sometimes these clots detach from the endothelial lining and move around the body via blood vessels and may cross the blood- brain barrier and get localized in sinuses.
• Internal hemorrhage – Hemorrhage leads to hematoma in the brain which cause thrombosis of veins.
• Meningitis – Infection of the meningeal layers (Dura, arachnoid and pia matter) also leads to CVST.
• Hormonal imbalance – Hormonal variation is also a cause of CVST.
• Injury – Any injury to the head is also a cause of CVST.

PRECAUTIONS

• Avoid alcohol, smoking, etc. as it further worsens the condition.

• Consume buttermilk instead of Yogurt. It is considered as an ‘abhishandhiahaara’ that leads to obstruction of channels.
