What are skin wounds, skin ulcers, skin lacerations, diabetic ulcers, venous ulcers, non-healing ulcers & wounds?

These all are skin disorders which are mentioned in detail:

1. Skin wounds

Skin wounds are caused when the skin is damaged or broken due to any injury. These wounds may be caused due to chemical, mechanical, thermal, electrical or nuclear sources. The skin can be damaged in a variety of ways like inflammation in skin, superficial wounds and abrasions, deep abrasions, animal bites, pressure sores, puncture wounds etc.

Sign and Symptoms of skin wounds:- The common symptoms of skin wounds are swelling, bleeding and pain. Some lacerations may bleed more if the area has a greater number of blood vessels like on face and scalp of a person.

2. Skin ulcers

Skin ulcers are sores that are accompanied by the sloughing-off of tissues which are inflamed. Skin ulcers are caused due to trauma, exposure to cold or heat, problems with blood circulation and irritation from the exposure to caustic material. These ulcers may cause red rashes on skin, a brown discoloration around the sore and dry, flaky skin.

3. Skin laceration

A skin laceration is a traumatic disruption in skin. This laceration is commonly caused by a sharp object like scissors, knife or broken glass. This injury causes cuts in the skin. Skin Lacerations are of five types:

  1. Cut laceration: This is most commonly caused when the skin comes in contact with sharp scissors, knife or axe etc.
  2. Grinding compression: When the tissue is crushed beneath the top layer skin and the epidermis.
  3. Split laceration: This laceration most commonly shows up on the hands, head, face and legs. These are caused due to objects that make a blunt impact, causing the tissues and skin to tear from compression.
  4. Tearing: This type of laceration occurs when the skin is broken by an object like a piece of paper.
  5. Over stretching: This type of laceration is caused by a gunshot. As the bullet pierces the skin at an angle, it will lodge beneath the skin and cause expansion and compression of the skin.

4. Non-healing ulcers and wounds

These are present on skin for 3-4 weeks and these ulcers and wounds does not get healed in eight weeks also. These are of different types like venous stasis ulcer, diabetic ulcer, pressure ulcer, arterial ulcer, marjolin’s ulcer, pyoderma gangrenosum, wounds that repeatedly break the skin, wounds related to metabolic disease.

5. Diabetic Ulcers

Diabetic ulcers are common in diabetic patients. These ulcers are caused due to infection, diabetic neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease, poor glycemic control, cigarette smoking, older age, amputations or previous foot ulceration, ischemia of small and large blood vessels etc. Diabetic ulcer fibroblasts are usually large in size.

6. Venous Ulcers

Venous ulcers occur when veins in legs do not push blood back up to the heart. The presence of increased pressure and excess fluid in the affected area can cause an open sore which leads to venous ulcers. Venous ulcers most commonly occur on the legs and above the ankle. This type of ulcers recover very slowly.

According to Ayurvedic point of view all these wounds and ulcers are known as “Vrana”. In Ayurveda, these are described in Shalya Tantra. Vrana is described as break, destruction or discontinuity of the body tissue. These conditions cause imbalance of all the three doshas pitta, vata and kapha in body.
