Aegle marmelos, commonly known as bael. In Sanskrit Bael is known as Bilva. This tree is ancient ayurvedic with spiritual and medicinal importance. Since Vedic period it has been extensively described in Indian literature. Its other names are Bengal quince, Golden apple, Japanese bitter orange, Stone apple or Wood apple. This plant is considered to be sacred by Hindus. It is a member of monotypic genus Aegle. This plant is a deciduous shrub or small to medium-sized tree. It can grow up to the height of 13m. Branches of Bael is slender drooping with the shabby crown.
Bark
Its bark is pale brown or grayish in color. The bark is smooth or finely fissured a flaking arm with long straight spines. Gum from this tress is clear, gummy sap which resembles an Arabic gum. This gum is sweet at first and then irritating to the throat.
Leaf
Leaves are trifoliate, alternate. They are ovate with tapering or pointed tip and rounded base. Bael’s young leaves are pale green or pinkish and when matures become dark green and completely smooth. Every leaf of this plant has 4-12 pairs of side veins which are joined at the margin.
Flower
Its flowers are 1.5 to 2 cm in size and are pale green or yellowish. Flowers are sweetly scented and are bisexual. Ovary of Bael is bright green with an inconspicuous disc.

Its fruits have typically the diameter between 5-12 cm.
