INTRODUCTION
ABPA is also known as the allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis which is characterized by hyperbolic response of the immune system to a fungus known as Aspergillus. This condition is common in people with asthma or cystic fibrosis. This type of fungus exists in abundance in soil and it can be commonly found in the sputum of a healthy individual. This fungus is also responsible for a number of lung diseases like aspergillosis. It is a type of hypersensitivity reaction which occurs due to the colonization of the fungus in the lungs. This disease can be mostly found in people in their 30s to 50s and it is also common in children.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF ABPA
This disease is the result of an allergic reaction when a person is exposed to a fungus known as Aspergillus fumigatus or it can also occur due to the uncontrolled asthma.

HOW TO DIAGNOSE ABPA
The exact method for the diagnosis is not found out so different methods are used for the diagnosis of the ABPA disease.
- Blood test and serology – This test is done by exposing the skin by fungus and if there is immediate reaction it is a hallmark for the ABPA. This test is performed firstly by skin prick testing and if it comes negative then it is followed by an intradermal injection. Serum blood tests are also important for the diagnosis of ABPA. Increased levels of IgE increase the suspicion.
- Radiological investigations – There is marked level of consolidation and mucoid impaction. These are the most commonly found radiological features of the ABPA.
- Culture – Sputum culture shows spores of the fungi which is a supportive test for the diagnosis of ABPA.
